Test Drive: Honda Civic 2.0 i-VTEC

The latest 8th generation Honda Civic is perhaps the best looking Honda Civic to date. It was first launched in 2006. A total of four models were introduced for the Malaysian market: 1.8 iVTEC, 2.0 iVTEC, Type R and Hybrid. For 2009, the Civic received a facelift which included new front bumpers, new sports rims and new rear lights. My review model is the FD2 2.0L i-VTEC pre-facelift.

Exterior & Design: The first impression one gets is of a very svelte and sporty car. The Civic sits low and appears sleek with its rakish front windscreen. Its lines are simple yet stylish. It is much bigger than previous generation Civics. The 17” alloy rims are elegant and adds to the car’s sportiness. The rear cluster of lights reminds me of Nissan Skylines.
Interior: Getting into the Civic, the first thing that catches the eyes is the futuristic dashboard with its two-tier multiplex meter. A digital speedometer sits on top of the analogue tachometer. The dash layout is intuitive and controls are simple. A 6-disc CD changer is standard with MP3 playback and also AUX input. The leather seats are comfortable and supportive although the two-tone colour might not be to everyone’s taste. The steering wheel comes with audio controls, cruise control and paddle shifts.
Engine: The FD2 Civic is equipped with the K20Z engine which pumps out 155bhp with 188Nm of torque. Being a VTEC unit, it revs readily naturally and loves to be pushed to its limit. Gear changes are smooth and engine is quiet when idle and cruising.
The Drive: It is easy to drive the Civic around town as the steering is light and responsive. The Electric Power Steering System helps to increase the tactile feedback when driving at higher speeds. Cornering ability is good. Acceleration is rapid and the engine revs even harder when driven in sports mode.

Conclusion: The 2.0 iVTEC 8th generation Civic is one of the best family sedans currently available in Malaysia for a sub RM130000 car. It combines sporty good looks with a comfortable ride and a well appointed cabin. For enthusiasts who crave more raw VTEC power, the Civic Type R is available at RM200000.
